Posted July 23rd, 2019 by daniel

So, you have decided it is time to get a pet – specifically, a cat. Yay!!  But now you find yourself looking at various breeds, perhaps spending time at the pet store or local animal shelter and asking friends/family what type of cat is best. If you can relate, then this post is for you.

As longtime pet sitters and cat lovers, we have definitely been around our share of cats over the years. Here are some insights about various cat breeds to help you narrow down your selection process.

6 of the Best Cat Breeds for Pets

  • Sphynx – While this cat certainly stands out from the rest due to being hairless, it is considered one of the friendliest cats out there! Better yet, because it is hairless, it is ideal for homes where allergies are a problem or where there are young children. The Sphynx is energetic and mischievous and love an audience.
  • Birman – With big blue eyes and a fluffy earth toned coat, the Birman cat is loyal, good natured and affectionate. They are as comfortable in a single person home as a multi-generational one, just so long as there are people around to interact with.
  • Ragdoll – This breed was first introduced in the 1960s. They are great for families in small homes and do well with children. And if you have a little one who loves to carry a pet around, the Ragdoll is the perfect cat breed as they love to e cuddled and carried.
  • Abyssinian – AS one of the oldest cat breeds in the world, the Aby is a social cat who enjoys playing with its family members just as much as sitting back and observing. However, don’t take their chilled-out demeanor as lazy, as they also love to race around a space and you may catch them sticking their nose in your space in effort to distract you.
  • Maine Coon – Nicknamed the America’s Cat, this large cat is a sweet natured animal that loves people of all ages.
  • Siamese – Perhaps of all the cat breeds out there, the Siamese is one of the most intriguing. The Siamese loves to be in your space, and is known for being quite vocal so you can easily know what they like or dislike.

In reality, nearly any type of cat can make a good pet. It is simply a matter of you taking time to get to know your chosen cat(s) and seeing that they are happy, healthy and safe. After all, your cat just needs to be loved. So, whether you choose a particular breed or one that is ‘love at first sight’ having a cat is a purr-fect addition to any household.
