5 Tips to Picking the Perfect Puppy Sweater

As December arrives, so does the cold, winter weather. Small dogs and dogs with short or thin fur need a little extra protection from the harsh cold. Spice up your pup’s wardrobe with a nice indoor or outdoor sweater or jacket. Not only will your dog be styling for the holidays, but warm and happy too!

  1. Pick a sweater or jacket that is the right size for your pooch. Either measure your dog to find the exact measurements or take your dog with you to the store to find a puppy sweater that fits perfectly. Be sure to measure your dogs neck, back and chest for the appropriate sizes. Sweaters and jackets are based on size, not just on your dog’s weight. Use a size chart for the sweater or an online size chart, like this one, to help you determine the right fit for your dog.
  2. Pick a puppy sweater for your dog that will fit his activity level. Dogs that are more active will need a sweater or jacket that is more durable and easier to wash than a dog that is a little more inactive. Active dogs also need sweaters that are made of a flexible fabric. This allows the sweater to more more freely with your pup. Comfort and ease of wear are really important for dog apparel.
  3. Consider whether your dog will wear the sweater more inside or outside. Inside sweaters don’t need to be as durable or water resistant. Loose knit fabrics like ones knitted or crocheted make excellent indoor sweaters. Tightly woven fabrics that are very warm and durable, like fleece, make good outdoor sweaters.
  4. Make sure your dog sweater or jacket covers your dog’s stomach. All the vital organs that need to be kept warm are found around your pup’s underbelly. The entire point of a dog sweater or jacket should be to keep your dog warm. Added fashion and style is a plus, so make sure the sweater is designed to keep your dog warm first and fashionable second. Dog sweaters and jackets should be more than just a fashion accessory.
  5. If you are looking for cute holiday sweaters, shop the off-season and holiday sales for the best deals. Read all manufacturing information, cleaning instructions and reviews you can find about your doggy clothes before you buy them. It’s important that your pooch look good and stay away from choking hazards that might fall off your sweater or jacket.

Choosing the right dog sweaters is not a problem for me, because I have a Saint Bernard, but your article is very useful for those that have small dogs like chihuahua.
