THANKSGIVING…FOR PEOPLE NOT PETS

Posted November 17th, 2010 by admin

…A long hot summer is quickly coming to an end and the hot humid afternoons are rapidly turning into cool mornings and mild temperatures through out the day.  Air conditioning is turned off, windows open up and heaters turn on to lesson the morning chill.

Halloween has come and gone with the laughter of children dressed in their most fearsome costumes trick or treating at your front door.  Leaves are gently falling in the most vivid colors of red, gold and yellow…AND THANKSGIVING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER.

Tradition brings families together all over America to re-unite and reminisce over seasons gone by.  It is time for the Turkey and Ham with all the trimmings we Americans so dearly love.  Their will be dressing…string beans…corn on the cob…mashed potatoes and turkey gravy…sweet potatoes…cranberries and yes cornbread…Ummmmm It smells soooo good!

BUT THANKSGIVING IS FOR US AND NOT OUR PETS!  All the wonderful smells can be very tempting to our pets.  Thanksgiving and Christmas can actually be very dangerous to both cats and dogs and it is up to us to make sure that our pets are safe and sound and away from these dangers.  Some ingredients in dressings or sauces can even be toxic to your pet!  Onions are especially bad so do not feed your dog or cat leftover gravies containing them.  There are many hidden dangers in your kitchen and around your stove that might harm that special cat that jumps counters to see what smells so good.  Hot stove burners, pans and warming plates, hot liquids, and sharp knives that have not yet been put back in the drawer or in the dishwasher pose great dangers.  Dressings or leftovers that contain sharp or splintered bones and Raisins…just to mention a few things can be deadly to your pet.

A-1 Pet Care recommends that you do your pet a favor and before guests or family arrive, give  Fido and Miss Priss a special dog or cat treat purchased form you favorite pet gourmet shop or boutique.  Your dog or cat will feel safe and secure in their special safe room resting on your bed or special blanket.  This way, your cat will not end up in the middle of the hot gravy bowl or spill hot wax from the table candle decorations on Grammas lap.  And your Aunty will not secretly go home and complain that, your “DUMB DOG”, Fido, should never be allowed on or at the table licking her legs and between her feet begging for Turkey scraps!

The safe thing for your pets during a holiday is to get them conditioned to stay in a special room where they are safe from crying babies and over-exuberant three year olds just wanting to give your dog or cat a kiss on the nose…this is very unsafe to both child and pet.  It is best to make sure that your guests are happy, well fed and content knowing that you care enough about your pet to keep him safe as well from both food and foe.

I suggest that you pamper your dog or cat with soft classical music…a favorite toy and blanket…maybe even a pet message right before company arrives and of course a big bowl of something very special…after all it is THANKSGIVING…and as a pet owner I am sure you are eternally grateful for that very special friend and companion…
