Why It Is Best To Fix Your Pets

Posted August 25th, 2015 by admin

As a pet owner, sometimes decisions have to be made that you may not want to face. These may be regarding types of medical treatment, whether to bring your pet along on your vacation, or perhaps whether or not to spay/neuter your pet. While for some pet owners, the decision to fix their pet may be a no-brainer, for others it is not so simple. It may be that you have been given conflicting information, you might question if it is truly good for your pet or perhaps you see it simply just another way the vet is trying to make money. Should any of these reasons resonate with why you are undecided as to whether to have your pet fixed, then consider these reasons given by the ASPCA.

  1. First, let’s dispel a myth. Having our pet fixed will not cause your pet to become fat. Lack of exercise and too much food will.
  2. By having your female cat or dog fixed, you are eliminating the risk of certain types of cancer.  Breast cancer is fatal in 50% of female dogs and in 90% of female cats. Spaying your pet before they go into their first heat can also protect them from diseases such as pyometra (a pus-filled uterus). By having your dog fixed, you can prevent the risk of testicular cancer.
  3. Animals that have been fixed are better behaved. You don’t have to be concerned with your pet marking their territory all over the house. You can also minimize and even eliminate aggression problems.
  4. It is more cost effective to have your pet spayed or neutered. Once your pet has been fixed, you won’t have to be concerned about feeding/caring for a new litter a couple of times a year. No finding homes or having to keep them yourself, no needing to have the carpet cleaned because the cat failed to find the litter box,  no time spent training the new pets to find the litter box, no needing to replace furniture…having your pet fixed means more money and time.
  5. Having your pet fixed prevents there being more stray animals in the community.  This means fewer animals preying on wildlife, less damage to area plants, fewer children frighten by untamed animals and fewer animals at risk of being hit by vehicles.

Having your pet spayed or neutered is another way to help them stay healthy.  It is a simple procedure that can be done in nearly any veterinary clinic, and it has a short recovery period. Making it even better, many clinics have special days where you can have your pet fixed at a lower cost.

So, don’t hesitate when it comes to promoting your pet’s health. Talk to your veterinarian today and schedule an appointment for spaying or neutering your pet. You will be glad you did.
