Summer Cool Down!

Posted July 9th, 2010 by admin

Imagine not being able to take off your winter coat on a HOT summer day! Our pets have very little choices on keeping cool from the summer heat besides panting. This is the main way for a dog to cool down. Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors with your pet. By taking precautions to prevent your pet from overheating, you can decrease the chance that a disaster will happen.

Provided by the ASPCA experts, here are a few signs of heat stroke to look for:

  • excessive panting
  • difficulty breathing
  • increased heart & respiratory rate
  • drooling
  • mild weakness
  • stupor & even collapse

If you suspect heat stroke:

  • seek veterinarian attention immediately!
  • find shade for the animal
  • place cool wet towels on pets head & feet
  • give ice cubes for your pet to lick

Dogs such as pugs, bulldogs and pekingese are called brachycephalic breeds. They are “short nosed” and most at risk of heatstroke.

NEVER leave a pet in a car! The inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, so this can mean real trouble for your furry companion! Play it safe by leaving your pet at home while on the road. If YOU see and animal in a parked car alone, alert the management of the store. If the owner does not return promptly then contact the police department.

Giving your dog a summer haircut will help decrease the chances of heatstroke. Be careful to leave some fur and not expose too much skin so there will be some protection from the sun. When using any sunscreen products, make sure they are specifically made for animals.

Cats can benefit from a daily brushing to remove excess fur to keep them from overheating. Also be extra careful when opening windows with a kitty in the house. Do a quick inspection of the screens to make sure they are tight and secure to keep your cat safe from a tragic fall.

And ALWAYS provide a fresh supply of water at all times, especially for outdoor animals! Hope these tips keep you and your pet cooled down for the Summer!
